Mice, part 2

So, I know I said my next post would be about our cat. Well, we haven't gotten a cat yet which is probably why this post is about more mice.

When last I wrote, the tally was one dead mouse found in the basement and one empty mouse nest and lots of droppings found in the car. My friend and her daughter who were riding to the Nashville area with us said they didn't mind driving in a car that seemed to have become the latest hang-out spot for the local mice. Just before Olivia, Josiah, and I loaded into the car, Bruce decided to look the car over. He took out the console from between the front seats so I wouldn't have to worry if a mouse was in there. Then he decided to look under the hood. Yep, you know what is coming. He found another mouse nest. Again empty, thankfully. It was sitting on top of the engine block and was made from the insulation from the car. A nice cozy spot for a mouse. This was destined to be the home of many little mice, I'm sure. Well, what could I do. We got in the car and went to pick up Trish and Tricia-Ann and off we went on our hour and 15 minute drive. We had a wonderful time. Didn't worry about the mice. Maybe I can do this country thing after all.

Well, we arrive home late that night. Bruce had tossed the mouse traps from the car onto the patio next to the basement door which is where we usually enter the house. I can see you are getting good at this now - yep, there was a dead mouse in the trap. Olivia and I decided to go in through the main, upstairs door. There is a good reason why no pictures accompany these posts.

I don't shiver quite as fiercely now, but ugh, ugh, ugh, I don't like this mouse thing. I am so thankful that God made man (not in the general human kind sense, but in the isn't my husband a wonderful man sense). This does not bother Bruce. He disposed of the dead mouse and set another trap in the car that night. Next morning, I decided to go check the mouse trap. I should have sent Bruce. Yep, a dead mouse in the trap in the car. Sigh. I was thinking my mom's advice in her comment on my last post - to buy a new car - was sounding pretty good right now.

Bruce to this point has been adamant that we will not get a cat. He detests them. I don't particularly like them, but this is the country and we have mice. An outside cat seems to me a necessity at this point. He agreed I could call and find out what owning an outside cat entails. Our friends the Lingos told us all we needed to know and agreed we could take a cat on loan and give it back if things didn't work out. We didn't get the cat because things weren't that bad yet - so says Bruce.

All seems quiet for a few days and we have a nice Lord's Day. Albeit with jokes from our friends about dressing up like giant mice and creeping around our windows at night. Can you see what is coming? We arrive home from church that night ( Jan. 24) and find another dead mouse at the back door. This time I was able to walk right past it and enter through the basement door. I think it might be time to order my subscription to Country Women's magazine :-)

Current tally: one dead mouse in the basement, one dead mouse in the car, two nests in the car, two dead mice at the door

It's been a week since our last mouse encounter. Still no cat. But stay tuned because I don't think this story is over yet.
